Country concert outfits for men

Four outfits from barely-western to fully committed, and an honest account of which one you should pick.

An outdoor country music concert crowd

The useful question is not what to wear but how western to go. There are four defensible answers and the right one depends mostly on how comfortable you are being looked at.

Outfit one: the minimum

Dark jeans, a plain shirt, boots. No hat, no snap shirt, no visible belt. This is the version for someone who wants to look like they belong without feeling dressed up. It works everywhere and it is what a large share of the crowd is actually wearing.

Outfit two: the standard

Bootcut jeans, a pearl snap shirt, a plain leather belt, boots. The default country concert outfit and the one most people should choose. Everything reads western, nothing is a statement, and you will not be the most dressed-up person in your group.

Outfit three: with the hat

The standard, plus a straw hat. The hat is the piece that most feels like dressing up, and it is also the piece that completes the look. The honest test: wear it around the house for twenty minutes first. If you keep taking it off, leave it at home - a hat worn self-consciously looks worse than no hat at all.

Outfit four: fully committed

The above, plus a tooled belt with a proper buckle, and a jacket. This works, but only if you commit to it and only if the pieces are good. Half-committed full western - a cheap hat with a plastic buckle - is where the costume problem starts.

The pieces, across all four outfits

Boots, jeans, shirt, hat and belt - buy in that order and you can assemble any of the four.

The three mistakes

  1. New boots. Break them in. Nothing else on this page matters if you cannot walk back to the car.
  2. A trophy buckle. Traditionally won at a rodeo or a show. Buying a hand-sized one for a concert is the clearest costume signal there is - see best western belt buckles.
  3. Too many loud pieces at once. A patterned shirt, a tooled belt, a decorated boot and a hat is four things competing. Pick one.

What about shorts?

At a hot daytime festival, plenty of men wear shorts and boots, and nobody minds. Be aware that it is a specific look rather than a neutral one - and that a tall shaft with shorts shows the whole boot, so it works better with a short roper. More in cowboy boots with shorts.

Common questions

What should a guy wear to a country concert?

Bootcut jeans, a pearl snap shirt in a solid or small check, a plain leather belt and broken-in rubber-soled boots. Add a straw hat if the weather is warm and you are comfortable wearing one.

Do men have to wear a cowboy hat to a country concert?

No. The hat is the piece that most feels like dressing up. Wear it around the house for twenty minutes first - if you keep taking it off, leave it at home.

Can men wear shorts to a country concert?

At a hot daytime festival, yes, and plenty do. It is a specific look rather than a neutral one, and it works better with a short roper than with a tall shaft.

Should I tuck my shirt in at a country concert?

Either works. Tucked with a visible belt reads more traditional; untucked is more casual and is the majority at most shows. Traditional rodeos are a different matter - tuck there.

What color should I wear to a country concert?

Dark. Mud, dust and spilled drinks are all part of a standing crowd, and a dark shirt and boot survive the evening looking far better than a light one.
