Cowboy boots at a wedding

Which boot for which role, what to wear with it, and the one preparation that matters at an outdoor venue.

A rustic barn wedding venue

Cowboy boots work at almost any wedding that is not black tie - but there is a line between a boot that looks considered next to tailoring and a boot that looks like fancy dress, and it comes down to three things: the toe, the sole and the stitching.

What makes a boot wedding-appropriate

  • A narrower toe. Round, R-toe or snip. A broad square toe is visually heavy and fights tailored trousers.
  • A thin leather sole. It reads as footwear rather than equipment - though see the grass warning below.
  • A plain or lightly stitched shaft. Heavy contrast stitching is the single clearest casual signal.
  • A dark, even color. Black or dark brown for men, cream or tan for a bride, no distressed or two-tone finishes.

The outdoor venue rule

If any part of the day is on grass, gravel or a lawn, have a cobbler fit a thin rubber half-sole to your leather-soled boots before the wedding. It costs a fraction of a new pair, takes a day, and is invisible from the side. A new leather sole on wet grass is genuinely treacherous, and a barn floor is usually polished concrete, which is worse.

The three-week rule

Buy wedding boots at least three weeks ahead. A leather-soled boot needs a fortnight of break-in, and a cobbler needs a day or two for the half-sole. Leaving it to the week before is how people end up standing through a ceremony in boots that are actively hurting - see how to break in cowboy boots.

Common questions

Is it OK to wear cowboy boots to a wedding?

At almost any wedding that is not black tie, yes. Keep the boot plain and dark, keep the sole thin and let the tailoring do the talking - heavy stitching and broad square toes are where it starts to look like a costume.

What cowboy boots should a groom wear?

A plain leather-soled boot with a round or narrow toe, in black or a deep brown, polished and matched to the belt. The boot should complement the suit rather than compete with it.

Can a bride wear cowboy boots?

Yes, and it is one of the few occasions where full decoration is exactly right. Choose a heel you can genuinely dance in, usually under two inches, and break them in properly beforehand.

What about an outdoor wedding on grass?

Have a cobbler fit a thin rubber half-sole to leather-soled boots before the day, or wear a rubber-soled boot. A new leather sole on wet grass is genuinely slippery, and polished barn concrete is worse.

How far in advance should I buy wedding boots?

At least three weeks. Leather-soled boots need a fortnight of break-in, and a cobbler needs a day or two to fit a half-sole if you want one.
