The best jeans for cowboy boots

One measurement decides whether jeans work over boots, and it is not the waist or the inseam.

Jeans falling over a leather boot

We choose picks by comparing published specifications, construction, sizing guidance and aggregated owner feedback. We have not worn these boots ourselves. How we pick

The measurement that matters is the leg opening - the width of the hem. It has to clear the widest part of the boot shaft without bunching. Everything else about a jean is secondary for this purpose, including the brand.

That is why the Wrangler Cowboy Cut exists in the shape it does. Wrangler describes it as classic lines at the waist, thighs and knees, slightly flared to fit better over boots, and that slight flare from the knee is the entire design point - it gives the hem the width to fall over a boot shaft in a straight line instead of catching on it.

Pick 1

Wrangler Cowboy Cut 13MWZ - best for the jean cowboy boots were designed around

Wrangler Wrangler Cowboy Cut 13MWZ - illustrative photo of jeans, not the product itselfIllustrative photo

There is one genuinely correct answer to what jeans to wear with cowboy boots and it is this one. Wrangler has made the 13MWZ Cowboy Cut since 1947 and describes it as classic lines at the waist, thighs and knees, slightly flared to fit over boots, in heavyweight 100% cotton with reinforced felled seams, five pockets, the W-stitch and seven belt loops. The slight flare at the hem is the whole point: it is cut to fall over a boot shaft without bunching, which is the thing every other jean gets wrong. It is also the official ProRodeo competition jean, which is as close to a standard as western wear has.

What you give up: You give up modern fit and softness. Heavyweight rigid cotton is stiff for the first few washes, and the high rise and roomy thigh are not a current silhouette.

Good

  • Cut specifically to sit over a boot
  • Extremely durable
  • Inexpensive

Less good

  • Stiff until broken in
  • High rise, roomy thigh
  • Not a modern fit

Pick 2

Ariat M4 Relaxed Bootcut Jean - best for a bootcut that does not look like rodeo gear

The M4 is Ariat's relaxed-fit bootcut and the practical middle ground between a Cowboy Cut and a normal jean. The leg opening is wide enough to sit over a boot shaft cleanly, but the rise and the thigh are cut closer to a modern jean, so it works at the office, at a concert and over boots without looking like you are dressed for a rodeo. If the Wrangler feels like a costume on you, buy this instead - it solves the same problem with less commitment.

What you give up: You give up the heritage and the price. It costs several times a pair of Wranglers and the fabric is a softer modern denim that will not last as long.

Good

  • Clears a boot without looking western
  • Comfortable immediately
  • Works outside western events

Less good

  • Costlier
  • Softer denim wears faster

Length: longer than you think

Jeans worn over boots are hemmed longer than jeans worn over shoes - the hem should sit roughly where the heel meets the sole at the back, with a slight break at the front. Too short and the boot shaft is exposed at the back when you walk, which looks like you are wearing someone else's trousers. Too long and the hem drags and frays on the heel.

Practically: if you have jeans hemmed for sneakers, they are too short for boots, and there is no fix other than a longer pair. Buy jeans specifically for boot wear and keep them for that.

Over, not tucked

Jeans go over the boot. Tucking is a riding and rodeo convention - it keeps denim out of the way in a stirrup - and outside those settings it reads as either costume or showing off a decorated shaft on purpose, which is a deliberate women's styling choice rather than a default. Common questions

What jeans do you wear with cowboy boots?

A bootcut or straight leg with a leg opening wide enough to clear the boot shaft. Wrangler's Cowboy Cut is slightly flared from the knee specifically for this, which is why it has been the standard since 1947.

Can you wear skinny jeans with cowboy boots?

Not over the boot - a skinny leg will not clear the shaft. Skinny jeans with cowboy boots only work tucked in, which is a deliberate styling choice rather than the default.

How long should jeans be with cowboy boots?

Longer than with shoes. The hem should sit roughly where the heel meets the sole at the back, with a slight break at the front. Jeans hemmed for sneakers will be too short.

Should jeans be tucked into cowboy boots?

No, as a default - jeans go over the boot. Tucking is a riding and rodeo convention, or a deliberate women's styling choice to show off a decorated shaft.

Do I need special jeans for cowboy boots?

Not special, but the right cut. A bootcut or straight leg with a wide enough hem is all that is required - and the hem needs to be longer than it would be for shoes.
