Cowboy boot size chart

Measure your foot, read across. Plus what the width letters mean and how western sizes map to street shoes.

Measuring and fitting a leather boot

Western boot sizes follow US street shoe sizes closely. Measure your foot length in inches, standing, at the end of the day, and read it off the charts below. If you fall between two sizes, take the smaller one - leather stretches in width, not in length.

How to measure

  1. Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, wearing the socks you will wear with the boots.
  2. Mark the end of your longest toe. Measure from the wall to the mark in inches.
  3. Do both feet. Most people have one slightly larger - fit that one.
  4. Measure at the end of the day. Feet swell by up to half a size between morning and evening.

Children's

Measure as above and add about half an inch of growing room - a thumb's width. Do not add more: a child's foot sliding inside a boot causes the same blisters an adult's does, and the boot gets abandoned. Re-measure every three months during a growth spurt. More in best kids' cowboy boots.

Fitting aids

Socks change the fit by most of a half size, and a stretcher opens a single tight spot.

Common questions

Are cowboy boot sizes the same as shoe sizes?

Close - most western boots run at or near your US street shoe size, with brand variation of about half a size. The length is similar; what differs is how the boot holds your instep and heel.

How do I measure my foot for cowboy boots?

Stand on paper with your heel against a wall, wearing your boot socks, and mark your longest toe. Measure that distance in inches, do both feet, and fit the larger one. Measure in the evening when feet are at their largest.

What does D width mean in cowboy boots?

D is the standard width for men's boots and the wide width for women's. Men's wide is usually EE; women's standard is B.

Do I size up or down between half sizes?

Down, with a slightly thicker sock. Leather relaxes across the width over the first weeks but does not get longer, so a boot that is too long will slip at the heel permanently.

What size cowboy boots for a child?

Their measured foot length plus about half an inch - a thumb's width - of growing room, fitted to the larger foot. Re-measure every three months during growth spurts.
