Country concert outfits for women

Five combinations that survive a whole evening outdoors, and the single rule that makes any of them work.

A woman wearing a dress and western boots outdoors

One rule runs through everything here: let one piece be the loud one. Decorated boots with a plain dress, or a patterned dress with plain boots. Decorated boots, a patterned dress, a tooled belt and a hat is four things shouting, and that is what makes an outfit read as costume rather than as clothes.

Five that work

  1. Jeans, western shirt, boots. The standard, and the most comfortable for a long standing evening. Front-tuck the shirt if you want more shape.
  2. Mid-length dress and boots. The easiest western outfit to get right. A dress that hits at or just below the knee with a mid-shaft boot is correct almost anywhere.
  3. Denim skirt, plain top, boots. Cooler than jeans for a summer show and reads unmistakably western without any decoration.
  4. Shorts and boots. A festival outfit rather than an evening one. Works best with a short shaft - a tall boot with shorts shows a lot of boot.
  5. Jeans, a plain tee, a decorated boot. When the boots are the whole point. Keep everything else deliberately quiet.

The pieces

A comfortable short-shaft boot, a decorated boot for when it is the statement, a straw hat, a shirt and the socks that stop calf rub.

Boots for a standing evening

Heel under two inches, rubber sole, broken in. A 2-inch stacked heel on a leather sole is a beautiful boot for a wedding and the wrong boot for six hours on grass. If your favorite boots are the second kind, bring them to the dinner afterwards and wear something sensible to the show. See best cowboy boots for concerts.

The hat question

A straw hat in warm weather is practical as well as decorative - it keeps the sun off during a long afternoon set. Measure your head rather than buying S/M/L, and remember that a hat in a crowd gets knocked. If you have long hair, measure with it in the style you will actually wear. Full method in cowboy hat sizing.

Practical additions

  • Mid-calf socks, even with a dress - they stop the shaft rubbing and nobody sees them.
  • A cross-body bag within the venue's size limit. Check the policy before you leave.
  • A layer you can tie around your waist, because outdoor venues get cold after dark.
  • Blister plasters if the boots are newer than a month.

Common questions

What should a woman wear to a country concert?

Jeans with a western shirt and boots, a mid-length dress with boots, or a denim skirt with boots. Keep one piece decorated and everything else plain so the outfit reads as deliberate.

Can you wear a dress to a country concert?

Yes - a mid-length dress with western boots is one of the easiest and most reliable country concert outfits. Keep the boots plain if the dress is patterned, and vice versa.

What boots should I wear to stand all evening?

A rubber-soled boot with a heel under two inches, broken in beforehand. Tall stacked heels on leather soles look wonderful and are the wrong choice for six hours on grass.

Should I wear shorts with cowboy boots to a concert?

It works at a hot daytime festival, and it works best with a shorter shaft - a tall boot with shorts shows a great deal of boot. For an evening show, jeans or a dress are easier.

Do I need a cowboy hat?

No, but a straw hat is genuinely practical for a long afternoon in the sun. Measure your head properly rather than buying S/M/L, and expect it to get knocked in a crowd.
