Cowboy boots with a suit

It works, with a specific boot and a specific trouser hem. Get either wrong and it does not.

A groom adjusting a boutonniere

Yes - with a plain, dark, leather-soled boot with a round, R-toe or narrow snip toe, and trousers hemmed slightly longer than usual with enough opening to fall cleanly over the shaft. A broad square toe or a heavily stitched shaft will not work with tailoring, however good the boot is.

The boot

  • Toe: round, R-toe or a narrow snip. The toe shape is the single most important variable - square toes are visually heavy and fight a clean trouser line.
  • Sole: thin leather. A thick rubber outsole under a suit trouser reads as a work boot.
  • Shaft: plain or very lightly stitched. Heavy contrast stitching is a casual signal, and it shows when you sit down.
  • Color: black with a black or charcoal suit, dark brown with navy, gray or tan. No distressed finishes, no two-tone.
  • Heel: moderate. A tall riding heel changes your posture and your trouser break.

The trousers

This is the half people skip. Suit trousers hemmed for dress shoes are too short for boots - a boot shaft sits higher than a shoe, so the hem rides up and exposes it. Have the trousers hemmed about half an inch to an inch longer than you would for shoes, with a slight break at the front, and make sure the leg opening is wide enough to fall over the shaft without catching. A very slim modern trouser will not clear a boot shaft.

Boots that work with tailoring

Narrow and round-toed, leather-soled, plain-shafted - the four shapes that sit properly under a trouser.

Match the belt

A plain smooth-leather belt matched to the boot color, with a modest buckle. A tooled belt and a large buckle undo everything the plain boot is doing - see how to wear a western belt.

Common questions

Can you wear cowboy boots with a suit?

Yes, with a plain dark leather-soled boot with a round, R-toe or narrow snip toe, and trousers hemmed slightly longer than for shoes. A broad square toe or a heavily stitched shaft will not work.

What cowboy boots go with a suit?

Plain, dark, thin-soled boots with narrower toes - a Tony Lama Bonham, a plain Justin or a traditional Dan Post are the shapes to look for. Avoid square toes, rubber soles and contrast stitching.

How should suit trousers be hemmed for cowboy boots?

About half an inch to an inch longer than for dress shoes, with a slight break, and with a leg opening wide enough to fall over the shaft. Trousers hemmed for shoes will ride up and expose the boot.

Can you wear cowboy boots with a tuxedo?

At a black tie event, no - tuxedos call for patent shoes. At a western-themed formal wedding, plenty of people do, and it is accepted as part of the theme.

What belt should I wear with boots and a suit?

A plain smooth-leather belt matched to the boot color, with a modest buckle. A tooled belt or a large buckle undoes the restraint the plain boot is providing.
