How to size a western belt

The number on your jeans is the wrong number. Here are the two that work.

Leather belts laid out

Measure an existing belt that fits from the prong of the buckle to the hole you use - that number in inches is your belt size. Or take your measured trouser waist and add two inches. Do not use the number printed on your jeans; jean sizing runs generous and a belt bought to it is usually two inches short.

Method one: measure a belt you own

  1. Lay the belt flat.
  2. Measure from the point where the prong sits in the buckle to the hole you actually use.
  3. Round to the nearest even number. Belts are sold in even sizes.
  4. That is your size, directly. This method is the most reliable because it accounts for where you wear a belt and what you wear it over.

Method two: measure your waist

  1. Measure around your waist where the belt sits - over the trousers you will wear, not over bare skin.
  2. Add two inches.
  3. Round to the nearest even number.

Why your jean size is wrong

Labeled jean waists are frequently an inch or two larger than the actual measurement - vanity sizing is widespread and inconsistent between brands. A man who buys 34-inch jeans may have a 36-inch waist, which means a 34-inch belt will not reach. Measure, do not assume.

Where the tail should sit

In a correctly sized belt, the loose end passes through the first keeper and reaches about halfway to the second belt loop - roughly three to four inches past the buckle. A tail that flaps well past the second loop means the belt is too long; one that barely clears the keeper means it is too short.

Matching a buckle to a strap

Width, exactly. Most western straps are 1 1/2 inches; 1 1/4 and 1 3/4 also exist. A buckle made for one width will not fit another - it is not a tolerance thing, it simply does not go on. Measure the strap, not the buckle you are replacing, because you may be replacing a mismatched one.

Belts in standard widths

Both of these are 1 1/2-inch straps with interchangeable buckles, which is the configuration to start with.

Common questions

What size western belt do I need?

Measure an existing belt from the buckle prong to the hole you use, or take your measured trouser waist and add two inches. Round to the nearest even number - belts are sold in even sizes.

Is belt size the same as waist size?

Not quite - a belt is usually two inches larger than your measured waist, because it goes around your clothing. And it is definitely not the same as your labeled jean size, which runs generous.

How much belt should hang past the buckle?

About three to four inches - enough to pass through the first keeper and reach roughly halfway to the second belt loop. Much more than that and the belt is too long.

What width belt fits my buckle?

Exactly the width the buckle was made for - most commonly 1 1/2 inches in western belts. A buckle will not fit a wider or narrower strap at all, so measure the strap before ordering.

What if I am between belt sizes?

Take the larger. A belt with a hole or two spare looks normal; a belt that barely fastens does not, and you can always have an extra hole punched.
