Cowboy boot width letters, explained
B, D, EE and the rest - what each one actually changes, and why the toe shape usually matters more.
By Selena H. · Updated October 13, 2026

In men's western boots D is standard and EE is wide. In women's, B is standard and D is wide. A width letter widens the whole boot, including the heel pocket - which is why, for most people whose feet hurt at the toes, a wider toe shape in a standard width is the better fix.
| Letter | Men's | Women's | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| B | Narrow | Standard | Common in women's, rare in men's |
| C | Narrow-standard | Wide-standard | Uncommon |
| D | Standard | Wide | Universal |
| EE / 2E | Wide | Extra wide | Common in men's, rare in women's |
| EEE / 3E | Extra wide | Very rare | Specialist stock only |
What a width letter actually changes
It scales the whole last - the toe box, the ball of the foot, the instep and the heel pocket. That is the critical part. If your problem is pain across the toes, an EE gives you the room you need at the front and also a heel pocket that is now too wide, which produces slip. Many people who go up a width end up solving one problem and buying another.
When a wide width is genuinely the answer
- Pressure across the top of your instep that does not ease with break-in - that is a volume problem, and only a width change fixes it.
- You cannot get your foot into the boot at all, even with a hard pull.
- Your foot is uniformly broad rather than broad only at the front.
- You have tried a wide square toe in a standard width and it still pinches across the midfoot.
When a wider toe shape is the better answer
If the pain is at the little toe, across the front, or at a bunion, you want a wide square or wide round toe in your normal width. It adds room exactly where the pressure is, keeps the heel pocket snug, and is available from far more brands than EE stock is. Our wide feet roundup lists boots that do this well.

Common questions
What does EE mean in cowboy boots?
EE is the standard wide width in men's western boots - one step wider than D. In women's sizing, D is the wide width and B is standard.
Is D width wide for cowboy boots?
In men's boots, D is the standard width, not wide. In women's boots, D is the wide width. The same letter means different things depending on which range you are shopping.
Should I buy a wide width or a wide toe?
A wide toe shape if the pain is across the toes, which it usually is - it adds room at the front without loosening the heel. A wide width if the pressure is across the instep or you cannot get the boot on.
Do all cowboy boot brands offer wide widths?
No. Ariat offers the broadest range of wide widths at mainstream prices; many brands only stock D in men's and B in women's, which is part of why a wide toe shape is the more practical route.
Can boots be stretched to a wider width?
Only marginally - about half a width with a two-way stretcher, and only in leather. A stretcher is for a localized pinch, not for converting a D into an EE.
