Do cowboy boots run big or small?

Mostly true to size, with about half a size of variation between brands. Here is how to handle that.

Brown leather western boots

Cowboy boots run close to true to size - start at your street shoe size. Expect brand variation of about half a size in either direction, and expect wide square toes to feel roomier at the front without actually being longer. Between sizes, always take the smaller one.

Why boots feel different even at the same size

  • The last. Every maker builds on its own foot-shaped form. Dan Post's traditional lasts are narrower and more upright; Justin's broad square toes are roomier at the front; Ariat's sport lines are roomier again.
  • The toe shape. A snip toe feels tight at the same length as a square toe, because the taper starts sooner. That is shape, not size.
  • The insole. A thick cushioned footbed takes up volume, so a boot with one feels snugger than a boot with a thin leather insole in the same size.
  • Your sock. A mid-calf merino sock against a thin cotton one is most of a half size of difference.

The between-sizes rule, and why

Take the smaller size. Leather relaxes across the width as you wear it, so a boot that is slightly snug across the ball will ease. Leather does not get longer. A boot that is half a size too long puts the ball of your foot behind the widest point of the boot, opens up the heel pocket, and produces slip that no insole, heel grip or thick sock ever fully fixes.

The one exception

If the pressure is across the top of your instep rather than at the toes or the ball, you may have a high instep rather than a long foot. Sizing up does sometimes solve that - but a wide width solves it better, because it adds volume without adding length. See cowboy boot width letters.

Adjusting a near-fit

Sock thickness and a narrow-cut insole are the two levers that work. Neither rescues a boot that is a full size out.

Common questions

Do cowboy boots run big?

Generally no - most run true to street shoe size, with about half a size of variation between brands. Square toes feel roomier at the front but are not longer.

Should I order a half size down in cowboy boots?

Only if you are between sizes. Then yes, take the smaller size with a slightly thicker sock, because leather relaxes in width but not in length.

Do Ariat boots run true to size?

They are among the most predictable in the category, usually matching street shoe size, which is why they are the safest brand to order online for a first pair.

Why do my boots feel tight across the top?

Usually a high instep rather than a short boot. A wide width adds the volume you need without adding length; sizing up adds length you do not need and causes heel slip.

Does the sock make a difference to boot sizing?

A noticeable one - a mid-calf merino boot sock against a thin cotton sock is most of a half size. Always fit boots wearing the socks you intend to wear with them.
