Choosing a cowboy hat for your face shape

Useful rules of thumb, and an honest warning about how much they actually matter.

A person wearing a western hat

The general principle is balance: add height where your face is wide, add width where your face is long. A round face takes a taller crown and a wider brim; a long face takes a shorter crown and a moderate brim. But proportion to your whole frame matters more than your face shape, and fit matters more than either.

The rule that matters more

Proportion to your whole body, not just your face. A 5-inch brim on a petite frame wears the person; a 3-inch brim on a tall broad frame looks undersized regardless of face shape. Stand in front of a full-length mirror, not a bathroom one - almost every bad hat purchase is made looking only at a head-and-shoulders reflection.

And the rule that matters most

Fit. A hat that is the wrong size will look wrong on every face shape, because it will either sit too high on your head like a prop or slide down to your eyebrows. Get the size right first - see cowboy hat sizing - and only then worry about proportion.

Common questions

What cowboy hat suits a round face?

A taller crown with a wider brim - 4.5 inches or more. Height in the crown counters the width of the face, and a generous brim balances a fuller shape.

What hat suits a long face?

A shorter crown with a flatter crease and a moderate 4 to 4.5-inch brim. A tall crown adds length to a face that already has it.

Does face shape really matter for hats?

It is a useful rule of thumb, but proportion to your whole frame matters more and fit matters most. Plenty of people look good in the hat the guidelines say is wrong for them.

How do I know if a cowboy hat looks right on me?

Look in a full-length mirror rather than a bathroom one, so you can judge the hat against your whole frame. Most bad hat purchases are made from a head-and-shoulders reflection.

What brim width is most versatile?

Four to four and a half inches. It is the classic proportion, it gives real shade, and it suits most heights and face shapes without looking either undersized or theatrical.
