What to wear to your first rodeo

More traditional than a concert, and the conventions here are actually observed. A short, honest guide.

A rodeo event in an arena

A rodeo is not a country concert. The crowd includes people who compete and people who work with livestock, the conventions are genuinely observed, and the difference between fitting in and standing out is larger than at a music event.

The etiquette that is genuinely observed

  1. Hat off for the national anthem, held over your heart. This is observed strictly and noticed immediately if you miss it.
  2. Hat off for the prayer, which opens many rodeos.
  3. Do not wear a trophy buckle you did not win. At a concert this is a minor costume issue. At a rodeo, the people around you may well have won theirs.
  4. Shirt tucked. The convention holds here where it has relaxed elsewhere.
  5. Straw or felt by the season. Also genuinely observed, where at a concert nobody counts the days.
  6. Do not handle anyone else's hat. Including picking it up to be helpful.

The full list is in cowboy hat etiquette. None of it is enforced and nobody will say anything, but the conventions are real and it costs nothing to keep them.

Practical notes

  • Dirt and dust, everywhere. Dark jeans and dark boots. A light-colored hat will need brushing afterwards.
  • Metal bleacher seats are cold in the evening and hot in the afternoon. Bring a layer.
  • It is loud and it runs long. Three hours is normal.
  • You will walk on uneven ground. This is not the day for a tall stacked heel.

Common questions

What do you wear to a rodeo?

Bootcut jeans over broken-in boots, a pearl snap shirt tucked in, a plain leather belt, and a hat that matches the season - felt in cold months, straw in warm ones.

Do you have to dress western at a rodeo?

No, and plenty of spectators do not. But the crowd is more traditional than a concert crowd, and jeans with boots and a tucked shirt is the easy way to look like you belong.

Should you tuck your shirt in at a rodeo?

Yes - this is one of the settings where the convention is still observed, where it has relaxed at concerts and bars.

Can I wear a big belt buckle to a rodeo?

Better not to. Large trophy buckles are won at exactly this kind of event, and the people sitting near you may have won theirs. A modest everyday buckle is the right call.

What rodeo etiquette should I know?

Hat off and over your heart for the national anthem and for the opening prayer, shirt tucked, no trophy buckle you did not win, and do not handle anyone else's hat.
