What is a pearl snap shirt?

A working-wear solution that became a style. Here is what it is and why the snaps are there.

A western shirt with snap fasteners

A pearl snap shirt is a western shirt that closes with snap fasteners capped in pearl or imitation pearl instead of buttons. It usually also has pointed front and back yokes, snap-flap chest pockets and a spread collar - and it is those yokes, as much as the snaps, that make it read as western.

Why snaps instead of buttons

The usual explanation is practical and it is the one that makes sense: a snap pulls open under force rather than catching. For someone working around livestock, fences and machinery, a shirt that tears open cleanly is safer than one that holds fast and drags you with it, and a snapped shirt is faster to fasten with cold hands. The pearl caps were a decorative flourish added by western shirt makers in the mid-twentieth century, and they stuck.

The features that make a shirt western

FeatureWhat it is
Pearl snapsSnap fasteners with pearl or imitation pearl caps
Front yokeA shaped, usually pointed panel across the chest
Back yokeThe same across the shoulder blades - often the most decorative part
Snap-flap pocketsChest pockets with pointed flaps, usually snapped
Signature stitchingMaker-specific decorative stitching, such as Wrangler's W on the pockets
Spread collarSlightly longer points than a standard dress collar
Long sleevesCut long on purpose so the cuff stays put when the arm is down

Is a checked shirt a western shirt?

Not on its own. Plenty of checked shirts have buttons, no yokes and a standard collar - those are just checked shirts. The yokes and the snaps are what make a shirt western, and a plain solid western shirt is far more western than a checked shirt without them.

How to wear one

Tucked into bootcut jeans with a western belt, which is the standard. Untucked at a concert or a bar if the shirt is cut short enough - traditional long-tailed western shirts hang past the hip and look wrong untucked. Buying advice is in best pearl snap shirts.

Common questions

What is a pearl snap shirt?

A western shirt that closes with snap fasteners capped in pearl or imitation pearl instead of buttons, usually with pointed front and back yokes, snap-flap chest pockets and a spread collar.

Why do cowboys wear pearl snap shirts?

The snaps began as a working feature - they pull open under force rather than catching on equipment or livestock, and they fasten quickly with cold hands. The pearl caps were a later decorative addition.

Is a plaid shirt a western shirt?

Not necessarily. It is the pointed yokes and the snaps that make a shirt western, not the pattern. A plain solid western shirt is more western than a checked shirt without yokes.

Are pearl snaps real pearl?

Usually imitation - a pearlized plastic or resin cap. Genuine mother-of-pearl snaps exist on higher-end shirts and are noticeably heavier and more varied in color.

How do you wear a pearl snap shirt?

Tucked into bootcut jeans with a western belt is the standard. Untucked works at concerts and bars if the shirt is cut short enough - traditional long-tailed cuts hang badly untucked.
