How to clean suede cowboy boots
Everything that works on smooth leather ruins suede. Here is the method that does not.

Let the boots dry fully, brush the nap with a brass or nylon suede brush, lift marks with a rubber suede eraser, brush again to raise the pile, then re-apply a protector spray. Never use cream, oil, wax, saddle soap or water on suede - all of them mat the nap and stain permanently.
Why suede is different
Smooth leather has a sealed outer grain, so creams and oils sit on and soak into a finished surface. Suede is the inner split of the hide with a raised nap - thousands of tiny fibers standing up. Anything oily flattens those fibers and darkens them, and once the nap is matted and stained there is no reversing it. Roughout is full-grain leather worn flesh-side out and behaves the same way: brush it, never polish it.
The method
Dry first, always
Work on damp suede and you will mat it. Wet boots get stuffed with paper and left at room temperature overnight before anything else happens.
Brush the loose dirt out
Light strokes with a brass or nylon suede brush, all in the same direction. You are lifting dirt out of the nap, not scrubbing the surface.
Erase the marks
A suede eraser - a firm rubber block - works on scuffs and on the shiny patches where the nap has been crushed. Rub gently, then brush the crumbs away.
Raise the nap
Short back-and-forth strokes stand the fibers up again, then one pass in a single direction to settle them evenly.
Re-protect
A suede protector spray from about 20 cm, two light coats with drying time between. Do this on new boots before the first wear, not after the first stain.
Specific problems
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| Dry mud | Let it dry completely, then brush it off. Never wash it off wet |
| Water spots | Brush when dry. If a tide mark remains, lightly dampen the WHOLE panel evenly and let it dry - uneven damp is what causes the mark |
| Shiny crushed patches | Suede eraser, then brush to raise the nap |
| Oil or grease | A specialist suede degreaser, or a cobbler. Home remedies usually spread it |
| Salt stains from winter | A dedicated suede cleaner; prevention via protector spray is far more effective |
The suede kit
A brush, an eraser and shapers. That is genuinely the whole list - do not add creams.

Common questions
Can you use leather conditioner on suede boots?
No. Creams, oils and waxes flatten the nap and leave permanent dark patches. Suede needs a brush, a rubber eraser and a protector spray - nothing else.
How do you get water stains out of suede boots?
Let them dry completely and brush the nap. If a tide mark remains, dampen the whole panel evenly and let it dry - the mark comes from uneven wetting, so evening it out removes it.
Can suede boots get wet?
They can survive it, but water marks the nap and repeated soaking stiffens it. A protector spray applied before the first wear makes a real difference; in persistent wet weather, wear smooth leather instead.
What is the difference between suede and roughout?
Suede is the thinner inner split of the hide with a napped surface. Roughout is full-grain leather used flesh-side out - much tougher, but cleaned the same way: brush, never polish.
How do you clean mud off suede boots?
Let the mud dry completely, then brush it off with a suede brush. Washing wet mud grinds it into the nap and makes the stain permanent.
