How to wear cowboy boots with leggings

Leggings are the easiest thing to put in a boot shaft and the easiest outfit to get wrong. Two measurements fix it.

Cowboy boots work with leggings when two things are true: the leggings are thick and opaque in a dark solid color, and the top is long enough to cover the hip and the seat - a tunic, an oversized shirt, a sweater or a short dress. Tuck the leggings smoothly into the shaft, pick a boot with an 11 to 13 inch shaft so there is enough boot to balance the leg, and keep the boots as the only decorated piece.

The reason this outfit goes wrong is almost never the boots. It is thin leggings, a short top, or a very short shaft that leaves an awkward band of ankle between the boot and the leg. All three are easy to fix before you leave the house.

The two measurements that decide it

  1. Shaft height. An 11-inch shaft is the comfortable default and a 13-inch shaft gives the strongest line, because more boot balances the narrow leg above it. Ankle boots and very short shafts are the hardest version of this outfit to pull off - there is not enough boot to anchor the leg.
  2. Top length. The top needs to cover the hip and the seat. Leggings are not trousers for this purpose, and a short top turns the outfit into one that reads as unfinished rather than casual. A tunic, a long sweater, an oversized button-down or a short dress all work.

Leggings that work and leggings that do not

TypeWorks?Why
Thick opaque ponte or scubaBestHolds its shape, does not bunch in a shaft, reads as clothing rather than activewear
Faux leatherVery goodSmooth in the shaft and dressy enough for an evening
Standard thick cotton or ponte in blackGoodThe reliable default. Black hides everything
Thin or semi-sheerNoShows every seam, bunches at the knee, and looks under-dressed with a boot
Bright prints and patternsRarelyThe boots and the leggings compete. One loud piece per outfit
Athletic leggings with logos and panelsNoReads as gym clothes with boots on, which is the one failure mode everyone recognizes

Four formulas that work

  • Oversized button-down, black leggings, mid-brown boots. The easiest version. Half-tuck the shirt at the front if you want a waist.
  • Long knit sweater, dark leggings, tall shaft boots. The cold-weather default. A belted sweater adds the shape the outfit otherwise lacks.
  • Sweater dress over leggings, decorated boots. The one occasion to let the boots be loud - see cowboy boots with dresses for the hem-and-shaft rule, which applies here too.
  • Faux leather leggings, plain black top, black boots. The evening version. Keep the jewelry simple and skip the hat indoors.

Tucking them in neatly

Leggings are the easiest thing in the world to put in a boot shaft, which is their main advantage over jeans - no bunching at the ankle and no fighting the shaft. Smooth them down the calf with your hand before the boot goes on, and if the fabric rides up as you walk, a mid-calf boot sock over the legging holds everything in place and stops the shaft rubbing. That sock trick is the single most useful thing on this page and almost nobody does it.

Boots that suit this outfit

A short shaft for the easy everyday version, a standard 11-inch shaft for the one that looks most deliberate, and the sock that keeps a legging from riding up inside the boot.

The three mistakes

  1. A top that stops at the hip. This is the one that makes the outfit look wrong, and it has nothing to do with the boots. Cover the seat.
  2. Thin leggings. They show the shaft seam, bunch behind the knee and undercut the whole look. Opaque, thick, solid.
  3. Too many statements. Decorated boots, a patterned legging and a fringed jacket is three. Pick one - the boots are the obvious choice - and keep the rest plain. More on this in what not to wear with cowboy boots.

Where this outfit is right, and where it is not

It is right for a casual day, a fall or winter weekend, running errands, a daytime fair or a relaxed country gig. It is not right for a wedding, where leggings read as under-dressed regardless of the boots, and it is a difficult call at a rodeo, where jeans are the convention and leggings will mark you as a visitor. For both of those, see cowboy boots at a wedding and your first rodeo outfit.

Cold weather

Leggings under a boot are warmer than jeans in a boot, because there is no bunching and no cold air gap at the ankle. Fleece-lined leggings and a mid-calf wool sock make a western boot genuinely wearable in winter, within the limits of the sole - a leather sole on ice is still a leather sole on ice. The winter rules are in cowboy boots in winter and cowboy boots in rain and snow.

Common questions

Can you wear cowboy boots with leggings?

Yes, and it is one of the easier western looks. The two things that make it work are thick opaque leggings in a dark solid color and a top long enough to cover the hip and the seat. A shaft of 11 inches or more balances the leg better than an ankle boot does.

What length top should I wear with leggings and boots?

Long enough to cover the hip and the seat - a tunic, an oversized shirt, a long sweater or a short dress. A top that stops at the hip is what makes this outfit look unfinished, and the boots get blamed for it.

Do leggings go inside cowboy boots?

Yes, always. That is their advantage over jeans - they tuck smoothly with no bunching at the ankle. Smooth them down the calf before the boot goes on, and a mid-calf boot sock over the legging stops it riding up.

What color leggings go with cowboy boots?

Black first, then charcoal, dark brown and deep navy. Solid and opaque beats printed, because the boots should be the piece people notice. Faux leather is the easiest dressier option.

Are leggings and cowboy boots appropriate for a wedding?

Generally no. Leggings read as under-dressed at a wedding whatever the boots are doing. A dress or a smart trouser with the same boots works far better - see our guide to cowboy boots at a wedding.
